Age-Friendly Torbay

Torbay successfully became an Age-friendly area in April 2021, and has full commitment from Torbay Council, the Torbay & South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, Public Health, together with a seat on the Torbay Health & Wellbeing Board.

The World Health Organisation describes an Age-friendly place as: “A world that enables people of all ages to actively participate in community activities and treats everyone with respect, regardless of their age. It is a place that makes it easy for older people to stay connected to people that are important to them”.

Age-friendly is a World Health Organisation designation and is based on eight areas of importance to older people – environment, housing, health, respect and inclusion, communication, transports, outdoor spaces, and social participation.

Currently, Torbay Citzens’ Assembly is focusing on:

  • Community support and health services
  • Housing
  • Transport

The central objective and commitment of the Charter is to progressively work to improve our ways of working and engaging with the people of Torbay. We will work together with you to identify and promote practises that can improve access, fairness, collaboration, active involvement, personal empowerment and delivery of better services.

Organisations then write their own commitments as to how their organsiation can meet the key principles of the charter.
